I came across a non-profit organization in the web that promotes steroid cream withdrawal to heal eczema.
We understand the side effect of using steroid cream and should stop using it when the rashes subside. In fact, steroid cream is not used to stop itch. It's used to
reduce inflammation. Taking antihistamines, moisturizing, managing stress and avoiding any triggering factor are more effective in controlling any form of eczema. Indeed, treating eczema is tiring and challenging.
I've stopped using steroid cream already, unless it is really really necessary. A very thin layer should be applied on the affected area and should not be used excessively to reduce the possibility of getting 'addicted'.
Nevertheless, atopic
eczema is a lot different from any other type of eczema. In my situation, coupled with dust mite
allergy and other form of triggering factors such as STRESS, withdrawing
from steroid cream solely will not heal the illness. Atopic eczema is partially caused by a genetic defect in our skin barrier system, allowing bacteria or allergens to enter the body. Eczema cannot be fully healed as the actual root causes are still unknown and there is no single medication that can be used to heal it in general. The triggering factor of eczema is varying greatly. In general, eczema might be curable to some extent if we dont expose ourselves to any triggering element. However, there is no guarantee that atopic eczema flare-up will not recur in future.
